Interview with Gab Art & Design!

Gaby Klein Cloth

Urban Eyecare is excited to announce our newest art cloth, created by local Phoenix artist Gabby Klein! We worked with Gabby to create imagery for our Anne et Valentin trunk show earlier this year and couldn’t wait to share more of her work with you.

Get to know Gabby in the interview below and stop into either office location for an art cloth!

Q: If you had to describe Gab Art & Design in 3 words, what would they be?

A: Colorful, whimsical, bold

Q: Do you have a personal favorite piece of yours? If so, what do you love most about it?

A: I love my most recent painting, ‘summer still life’ (you can see it on my Instagram). I hadn’t painted in about two years, and I found so much joy in allowing myself to experiment with a tangible medium again. I’m really happy with how it turned out 🙂

Q: You’re hosting your dream dinner party-what are you serving and who is invited?

A:We would definitely start with snacks (I’m talking pickles, olives, tinned fish, fresh berries, lots of cheese) and some really good pasta for the main course. My invite list would be a mix of visual artists, musicians, comedians, and friends (Lisa Hanawalt, Maggie Rogers, and Ilana Glazer, to name a few). It would be an evening filled with thoughtful banter, storytelling, and laughs.

Q: What are some of the ways that you push yourself in your art practice?

A: I try to mix up my mediums when I can to avoid getting stuck in one space for too long. I spend most of my days designing on my computer, so it’s nice to switch back to pen/paper, painting, or even my iPad every now and then.

Q: Who would be your dream artist to collaborate with? (anyone from any time period etc!)

A: Probably Ray Eames! She was a woman of many talents (painting, interior design, textile design, and more) and I feel like we’d be able to make some really beautiful, functional work together.

Q: What are some of your favorite color combinations to work with?

A: I love primary colors. If you can imagine the most basic box of Crayola crayons, those are probably the colors I’m using in my work.

Q: If you had to make a mini playlist that describes Gab Art & Design, what songs would be on it?

A: Music is a HUGE part of my creative practice. I don’t know how I’d narrow it down to a few songs, but it would likely be a mix of acoustic folk, indie pop, and a sprinkle of dance/electronic.

Q: What does this next year look like for you creatively?

A: I’m really focused on coming back to my craft. I want to bring my ideas to fruition wherever I can, whether it’s through journaling, drawing, or painting, or some other creative outlet. I spend a lot of time designing work for others (which I love) and want to make sure I’m giving the same amount of care to my own ideas. Balance is SO hard but it’s a practice 🙂
